Medical Technician

Duties include varied responsibilities in the Specimen Processing / Reference testing section but also may involve similar duties in other sections such as Urinalysis, Microbiology, and Chemistry as needed or directed. Principle duties and responsibilities include:
1. Phlebotomy Performs phlebotomy as required / directed, (usually limited to medical center employees) following established procedures for identification / collection / labeling / processing. Has knowledge of and ability to collect samples appropriate for the tests requested by the physician using the correct preservatives, anticoagulants, collection intervals and /or times, and patient condition (s). Ensures specimen integrity for testing by placing the specimen on ice, protecting the specimen from light, etc. as may be required. Practices universal precautions including appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when performing phlebotomies and handling specimens. 2. Quality Control Adheres to established quality control guidelines as mandated by the College of American Pathologists and as outlined in the appropriate procedure manuals / policies / memoranda. Operates equipment including performance / maintaining records of quality control and limited maintenance on lab equipment such as centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, electronic devices. Monitors and maintains supply records to include ordering, tracking, receipt, and expiration dates. 3. Receiving/Accessioning Initiates the receipt of specimens into the laboratory computer system (VISTA) utilizing ward order entry or multipurpose accessioning. Itemizes individual patient samples collected by clinical staff. 4. Specimen Processing Evaluates the suitability of the specimen for analysis, requesting new specimen if determined to be unusable. Prepares specimens for analysis, insuring that the physiologic state of the specimen properties is maintained. Assigns priority to test requests and executes them expeditiously for use in critical care situations. Accomplishes all phases of processing and dispatch to include delivery of samples to their respective sections. Transfers specimens to appropriate storage and/or transport media. Performs assigned analytical tests or procedures that require limited independent judgment and recognizes factors that affect measurements and results and takes appropriate action according to predetermined protocols. Measures 24 hour urine's total volume, prepares samples / aliquots for appropriate in-house labs and outside reference labs. 5. Reference Testing Processes / prepares samples for reference testing. Performs computer functions relative to reference testing including requesting special tests, generating work-lists, and data entry of results. Processes meticulous legal documentation and technically sensitive packaging with supportive information of quality controls for drug screens. Follows proper shipping procedure under TVHS-Nashville campus, IATA, FEDEX, Department of Transportation and other regulatory transportation agencies rules / regulations. Communicates normal ranges, test results, panic values, test costs, availability and turn around time to requesting clinicians. Work Schedule:

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
(a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR, Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Successful completion of a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least twenty-four (24) semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full time-time academic study is defined as thirty (30) semester hours, forty-five (45) quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least twenty (20) hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately thirty-six (36) weeks in a business, or technical school. OR, Combination:
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond post high school education. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note:
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements:
Physical demands may involve lifting, standing, walking, bending, or sitting, any of which may be required for prolonged periods of time. The Medical Technician must be able to communicate verbally and have the digital dexterity and adequate vision to perform safe venipuncture procedures. Lifting will not exceed weight of 40 pounds. The person in this position will utilize all safety practices and equipment required by the laboratory, facility policy, accrediting and regulatory agencies for purposes of ensuring compliance with occupational safety requirements. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
